About DMCS

The Department of Microelectronics and Computer Science (DMCS) was established by Prof. Andrzej Napieralski in May 1996. The department's employees deliver lectures and practical classes at the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control Engineering at Lodz University of Technology, as well as at the International Educational Centre of Lodz University of Technology, in Polish, English, and French. The department engages in wide-ranging scientific and research collaboration with institutions around the world. This collaboration is continuously expanded through the international MIXDES conference, which has been organized annually by the department since 1994.

Until 2018, the department has completed over 55 research projects funded by the Committee for Scientific Research and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, as well as 16 international projects. Many of the research projects are interdisciplinary in nature. The department has been involved in European Union-funded projects. From 1991 to 2007, it completed 10 projects within the Tempus and Copernicus programs, as well as a NATO grant. Additionally, the department participated in 9 European scientific research projects (1 ESPRIT-BARMINT, 2 projects from the EU Fifth Framework Program – SEWING and REASON, 2 projects from the EU Sixth Framework Program – CARE and PERPLEXUS, and 4 projects from the EU Seventh Framework Program – EUCARD, TIARA, EDUMEMS, and ADEPT). The department was also a partner in the ERASMUS MUNDUS project – LAMENITEC.

The most significant recent international projects include:

  • Bilateral cooperation with Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg in the field of electronic equipment design for accelerator control systems (since 2002)
  • PERPLEXUS (EU Sixth Framework Program) – development of a network inspired by living organisms built from reconfigurable specialized data processing units (2006-2009)
  • X-FEL (X-ray Free-Electron Laser) – collaboration with the research center DESY, Warsaw University of Technology, and the Institute of Nuclear Problems in Świerk (2008-2011) Eu-CARD (EU Seventh Framework Program) – construction of a 2-kilometer linear accelerator and a free-electron laser XFEL. The department was responsible for developing the accelerator control system using advanced telecommunications technologies (2009–2013)
  • TESLA-XFEL – accelerator control system for XFEL, collaboration with Warsaw University of Technology and DESY (2010-2014)
  • ITER-CODAC – collaboration with the ITER center in Cadarache, France (since 2010)
  • EduMEMS (EU Seventh Framework Program) – MEMS circuit design with a focus on interdisciplinary issues related to various physical phenomena (2011-2016)
  • ARUZ – Analyzer of Real Complex Systems (ARUZ) – the first-ever digital laboratory for special tasks carried out in cooperation with the Lodz-based company Ericpol.
